BWEA warns Wales over renewable energy targets

Friday, July 24th, 2009

A lack of progress on renewable energy and the development of windfarms is being made in Wales, the British Wind and Energy Association (BWEA) has warned.

Releasing a new report entitled Wind Energy in Wales: State of the Industry, the organisation claimed that very few approvals for wind projects are being given out compared to other parts of the UK.

BWEA Cymru noted that Scotland and Northern Ireland are on course to meet targets for wind energy while Wales is expected to fall 800MW short of its own capacity goal for 2010.

Since it set the target in 2005 – which called for the creation of 1GW of new onshore and offshore wind power over the following five years – less than 250MW of new wind capacity has been approved.

On top of that, just 100MW has actually been built in Wales over the past four years, the report highlighted.

Maria McCaffery, chief executive of the BWEA, suggested that much needs to be done if the Welsh Assembly Government is to meet its goal of making the country self-sufficient in renewable energy by 2028.

”That bold vision requires the right political decisions to approve planning applications on the ground. As it stands today, decisions are just not being made,” she added.

UK government urged to focus on energy efficiency for low carbon switch

Friday, July 24th, 2009

The transition to a low-carbon society in the UK will require a much greater emphasis on business energy-efficiency measures, it has been claimed.

Speaking in response to the publication of the government’s Low Carbon Transition Plan, an organisation helping firms to improve their environmental performance has claimed that renewable energy is only “part of the solution”.

According to the Cumbria Green Business Forum, the plans outlined in the report will help to bring about positive change in current UK business practices and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

”We do need to focus on renewable energy as a primary target for that. For so long now, the UK has relied upon its own indigenous forces of gas and oil,” said John Barwise, chairman of the group.

However, he added: “I would like to see a bigger emphasis on energy efficiency than is currently the case.

“

The Low Carbon Transition Plan calls for ten percent of the required annual emissions cut between now and 2020 to come from greater energy-efficiency in the workplace.
